Sappi Europe has launched Parade Face Edge, an 80g/sqm one-side coated semi-gloss paper for self-adhesive labels used on products exposed to oils and grease.
The paper combines a grease-resistant fibre base with a coated surface and is suitable for flexo, gravure and offset printing. Its construction is designed to resist grease on the label surface while helping prevent oil from penetrating through the cut edge.
“Oil can reach a label in more than one way. It can penetrate the surface, but also seep in through the cut edge and spread through the paper,” says Jan Hasselblatt, head of sales self-adhesive labels, Sappi Europe. “Parade Face Edge addresses both routes by building grease resistance into the paper structure and combining it with the surface quality converters know from the Parade Face range. It gives converters and brand owners a practical way to move away from intentionally added PFAS while keeping labels clean, readable and attractive throughout use.”
The paper does not contain intentionally added PFAS, halogen-based polymers or wax. Sappi said the integrated grease resistance is designed to help reduce staining and maintain label appearance and legibility during storage, transport and use.
Applications include labels for olive and other edible oils, sauces, dressings, dairy and delicatessen products, as well as beauty and personal care products containing oils, creams and lotions. Industrial applications include lubricants, technical oils and maintenance products.
Parade Face Edge is suitable for direct food contact and can be used on returnable and non-returnable bottles and other containers. The reverse side is treated for further processing and the paper can be laminated in self-adhesive label constructions. It is supplied in reels, with FSC Mix Credit and 100% PEFC-certified versions available on request and subject to availability.
Sappi said Parade Face Edge provides a paper-based option for grease-sensitive applications as the first phase of the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) takes effect. The company said the product addresses the requirements set out in Article 5.5 of the PPWR.
The new grade is the first product in Sappi’s Parade Face portfolio to combine coated surface protection with grease resistance integrated into the fibre base.
